In various developing countries, the significance of genuine agrarian reform in achieving economic growth and social justice is undisputed. However, one of the major challenges facing organizations of small food producers, especially peasant movements, is the continuing dominance of the neoliberal paradigm of development. Market.orientated and liberalized policies have had a devastating effect on labor, trade, social services – and agriculture, undermining the decades-long struggles of the world’s peoples for genuine land reform.
The negative impact of neoliberal policies is evident across three continents. The findings arising from research in case studies in Asian, African and Latin American countries show that, from large-scale land-grabbing to pro-landlord legal loopholes, the plight of the peasant sector has been exacerbated by the neoliberal development framework.
This second edition aims to provide lessons learned from particular country experiences, as well as insights into the aspirations of peasant movements, towards charting a path to genuine agrarian reform. As resistance grows against neoliberal globalization, the persistent struggle of the peasant sector is in line with the goal of all marginalized and oppressed peoples: the alternative paradigm of development justice, which rests on principles of equality, sustainability, and recognition of human rights for all.
