Afin de mettre en lumière toute la complexité de la situation des kurdes pris dans la guerre régionale en Syrie et en Irak, les AMD organisent une soirée-débat à partir de deux articles du Monde Diplomatique de juillet : “La sale guerre du président Erdogan” de Laura-Maï Gavériaux et “Aux sources du communalisme kurde, Murray Bookchin, écologie ou barbarie” de Benjamin Fernandez.

For the past six years ASTM has supported the work of CHINTAN in promoting socially and environmentally more sustainable policies in India. Like most of the developing world, India is being transformed by both globalization and urbanization. Many urban Indians have become fervent consumers in the last two decades, leading to a quantum leap in the demand for resources and intense pressure on the environment. Already today, India produces 42 million tonnes of waste annually, a fact that is inseparably connected to the work of the informal sector, which includes the 1% of an average city’s population who recycle waste and reduce pressure on the environment.

Managing waste, ensuring sustainable consumption and a healthy environment for every citizen and ensuring just, decent and safe working conditions for waste handlers are, therefore, urgent challenges adressed by ASTM’s partner CHINTAN in New Delhi.

Growing evidence of the ecological unsustainability and iniquitous nature of the current economic development model is prompting a search for alternatives. While various approaches to ‘green’ the economy are being suggested, these are often managerial or technofix-dependent, without fundamentally challenging the political, economic, and social structures that have created the problem in the first place, and without providing an alternative to ‘growth’ as the dominant economic ideology of today.

Are there alternative frameworks that can point the way to a truly sustainable and equitable future? Do elements of such frameworks already exist in concept and in practice, and if so, what principles can be derived from them? What needs to be done to make the transition towards such a future?

The presentation will attempt to answer these questions, focusing on one such alternative framework, Radical Ecological Democracy, or eco-swaraj. This framework arises from the myriad grassroots initiatives at meeting basic needs, and achieving alternative modes of governance, production, distribution, and consumption, that have sprung up in many parts of the world

Ashish Kothari is an Indian sociologist and environmental activist. He is one of the founders of Kalpavriksh, an environmental and social NGO promoting ecological sustainability and social equity and has coordinated India’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan process, served on Greenpeace International and India Boards and steering committees of two IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Commissions. He has authored and edited over thirty books, including Churning the Earth: The Making of Global India, co-authored with Aseem Shrivastava.
