Lunch debate : Development and human rights work in the Philippines increasingly under threat @ Centre d'Information Tiers Monde (CITIM)
Mar 11 @ 12:30 – 14:00

ASTM is delighted to invite you to a lunch debate with Estrella Catarata, Director of ASTM’s partner organisation, Philippine Network of Food Security Programs (PNFSP).17469e_6bacd3144c21454f89001ab59ebf3251.jpg_srz_124_104_85_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz

The Philippines is a country marked not only by regular natural disasters, but by massive inequality, poverty and food insecurity, especially in the rural areas. Between 1999-2014 the number of Filipino families who considered themselves as suffering from hunger rose from 8 % to 18%.

PNFSP is committed to address the diverse causes of food insecurity in the Philippines. The network facilitates trainings and exchanges of experience between its 30 member organisations with a view to improving agricultural production methods. At the same time, through political advocacy work, they challenge issues such as land conversion, landlessness, import liberalization and development aggression projects that constitute a threat to food security.

PNFSP is alarmed at the frequent cases of attempts to obstruct the socio economic projects implemented by development organizations and the harassment of the development workers themselves.

On Friday March 11, Estrella Catarata will update us on the current situation with examples from specific incidents experienced by PNFSP member organisations. She will be accompanied by Ms. Michelle Campos, the daughter of one of the victims of the September killings and Dr. Naty Castro of the Philippine human rights organization Karapatan.

The appalling news Friday March 4 of the assassination of the Honduran indigenous leader Berta Caceres, who had spent her life fighting for indigenous rights, has made it dramatically clear that the lives of human rights defenders in many parts of the world are in grave danger.

Come and join us for the debate. Take your sandwich or snack with you.
